EstPlan6

Although virtually any adult can create a Last Will and Testament, not everyone has time to spare. Younger professionals may be overwhelmed by their careers, and childcare needs can consume all of their time. Even retirees may have busy schedules filled with family gatherings, medical appointments, and vacations. How much time should you set aside for the creation of your Will? An experienced estate planning lawyer in Palm Beach County help you draft a Will expeditiously.

While creating a Will might seem like a daunting task, it needn’t take you very long. For many Florida residents, this process only takes a few days. You should start by scheduling a consultation with an estate planning lawyer. During this initial meeting, your lawyer can help you understand the process of creating a Will. You should also discuss your specific goals and priorities. This meeting often takes 1-2 hours.

At the end of the meeting, you and your lawyer will agree on what you want to achieve with your Will. Your lawyer may offer legal advice, but you are under no obligation to follow it. After this meeting, you will probably be asked to provide some information to assist your lawyer with preparing drafts of documents for you to review and approve. Then, you can get back to your busy schedule as you wait for your lawyer to complete the initial draft.

A few weeks later, you’ll receive this draft (usually via email). You can then spend a some time reviewing the draft, making notes and writing down your questions. If you see any errors, you can point them out and have them corrected. You can also make adjustments to the Will at this point. Once you approve the draft, you can schedule a visit to the law firm to sign the Will, along with any other documents you and your lawyer agreed that you needed.

Although the process might take a few weeks to complete, you only really need to devote a few hours of your time when creating a Will in Florida. In addition, some law firms may be able to expedite this entire process upon request.

Try Not to Rush Your Will

Although it might be difficult to set aside time for your Will, you should avoid rushing through this process. Your Will can have a tremendous effect on your beneficiaries and a few extra minutes could provide them with greater financial security. Additionally, the discussions you have with your lawyer will probably have brought up other questions and considerations that were not on your mind when you first began this process.

While you are working on your Will, consider making extra time for additional estate planning documents – such as powers of attorney, advance directives, and trusts.
